Jupiter Moved Into Aquarius and the Great Conjunction

It’s a very special day for astronomers and astrologers. The two visible gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, are coming together in the sky. Not only that, it’s happening today, the Winter Solstice.

As we learned in the previous article, Saturn already entered the astrological sign of Aquarius. As all astrologers know, there are 30º in each zodiac sign and currently Saturn is at the first degree (0º) of Aquarius.

On Dec 19, Jupiter crossed over into Aquarius as well and they are now conjoined. Anytime planets are close to each other, it’s called a conjunction. When they are at the same degree, it’s an exact conjunction. When they are at the same longitude as well, this is when they look overlapped. This is the concept of declination. Because Jupiter and Saturn are slow-moving with different orbital periods, it’s rare for them to conjoin. It’s even more rare of them to conjoin in a tight declination AND at this particular degree of Aquarius.

Jupiter in Aquarius signifies the greatest minds coming together to benefit the world. The most educated people in society are working tirelessly to protect and provide hope. It’s a transit that teaches us the ways in which we need to come together, regardless of hierarchy, to benefit our future.

Every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn conjoin. However, for the last 178 years, they have only conjoined in the Earth signs- Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. This pair of planets began this cycle of Earth sign conjunctions in 1842. This was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. In astrology, Earth signifies the material and physical.

Prior to that, Jupiter and Saturn had a 159 year cycle of conjunctions in Fire signs (1663-1822) and prior to that 218 years in Water signs (1425-1643).

So when was the last time Jupiter and Saturn met up near 0º Aquarius? It was during the the Air cycle conjunctions on March 4, 1226 at 2º Aquarius, which was 794 years ago.

Based on Biblical interpretations, it is said that Jesus was born under a Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction. This is part of the reason why headlines are calling it the "Christmas Star".

Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction Cycles

  • Earth Cycle: Nov 1047-April 1206 (159 years)

  • Air Cycle: March 1226-Jan 1405 (179 years)

  • Water Cycle: Feb 1425-Feb 1643 (218 years)

  • Fire Cycle: Oct 1663-Jun 1822 (159 years)

  • Earth Cycle: Jan 1842-May 2000 (158 years)

  • Air Cycle: Dec 2020-Dec 2139 (119 years)

This new Air cycle marks a shift out of the Industrial Age and into the Age of the Technology. Air represents speech, thought, communication. Aquarius energy is non-traditional, progressive, and favors decentralization. As we reflect on what this new era will mean for us, think about how can we invent new ways to advance as a collective using the internet, science, and technology. How do we open up to supporting each other in order to build a better future?
